Paul Brunton 1945 - 2009
Twenty years ago Paul, who I had the honor of working with for 8 years, asked me why I think the good and the great in the industry returned to his firm and entrusted him and his team for training their latest batch of project managers and business leaders. After telling him that I thought it was the great content of the course, then a journey of the logical project thinking and possibly the fact his tutelage included the soft skills that are essential to being a leader in the field he told me to stop.
He said “It’s all about maintaining standards. Not first class, but different class.”
Paul completed the first delivery of the Project Planning and Control Class in Hong Kong in 1983 for the Computer Society. From that class, for which he was presented with a special award by the Chairman of the company, Paul grew a portfolio of FTSE 100 companies that would be an envy to any consulting firm.
People who knew Paul understood that he needed no elaboration of his achievements; however first and foremost, Paul was a teacher of prodigious talent. He had an incredible knack of packaging project practice into a form that is easy to understand and goes to the core of why, working in technology, we do what we do. The courses he designed differentiated themselves by imbuing with them with his love for insight, intelligence and above all discovery.. it is this standard – to hold discovery as the paramount importance when learning and training – that shines a clear light over the man, and the legacy that he built.
